Food & Feminism

I sit down (virtually) with a cup of chai to speak to Nida Bilgrami and Nida Jehangir to talk abut the issues women face in the kitchen, at home and commercially.

Nida Jehangir @fooddiarieslondon runs the food and travel blog, Food Diaries London. She shares recommendations to eat in London and around the world.

Rida Bilgrami @ridhb is a food journalist focusing on the intersection with history, identity and migration. Her work has been featured in VICE, Eater, Gastro Obscura, Catapult, and The Juggernaut.

We talk about the complicated and nuanced relationship between food and feminism, our aversion to cooking, even brewing a cup of chai with resentful obligation as we grew up, and How we came to appreciate and celebrate this vital life skill in our own right. It led our conversation to the value of women’s unpaid labour and the role of female chefs (if there is such a thing!) in commercial kitchens.
